Vivo has a new mid-range smartphone in Malaysia for those looking for a device on a budget. The Vivo Y22s packs the solid Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor, but it seems several corners have been cut to meet its sub-RM1,000 price tag.

Vivo Y22s Malaysia prices and availability

The Vivo Y22s comes in just one configuration with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. You will be able to get it RM999 from each Vivo concept store, their authorized dealers, the official Vivo eStore and the official Vivo store on Shopee and Lazada. If you receive it between November 26 and December 25, you can also claim an additional year of extended warranty worth RM199.

However, it’s a bit of a hard sell when you consider that Vivo has a few better midrange options in their stable. For example, if you’re looking for a Snapdragon 680 device, the Vivo T1x will still be sold with a lower price tag and better specs overall. The Vivo T1 5G currently costs just RM1,130 at Vivo’s Shopee and Lazada stores, and packs a much more powerful Snapdragon 778G processor under the hood.

Vivo Y22s specs

You can probably tell right away where Vivo had cut corners on the Y22s. It has a 6.55-inch, HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is a pretty mediocre screen for a smartphone that would have cost you almost RM1,000. In comparison, its rivals like the Realme 9 and Redmi Note 11 Pro all use FHD+ AMOLED displays instead, while even Vivo’s own T1x has an FHD+ LCD display.

Under the hood, the Vivo Y22s, meanwhile, packs a Snapdragon 680 system-on-chip with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also features Extended RAM 3.0, which allows you to use part of the system storage as additional RAM when needed. You can also insert an additional microSD card which is also up to 1 TB in size. The Vivo Y22s comes standard with Funtouch OS 12.

In the camera department, meanwhile, the Vivo Y22s packs a 50 MP, f/1.8 main camera over a 2 MP, f/2.4 macro sensor on the back. For selfies, meanwhile, you get an 8MP, f/2.0 front camera. It also packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging, which Vivo claims will last over 21 hours of video streaming. Other notable features include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and support for WiFi 5, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. It weighs 192g and is 8.38mm thick and is available in either Starlit Blue or Summer Cyan.
