Redmi Pad review: Budget tablet done right

The screen of the Redmi Pad has thick bezels, but that shouldn’t bother you as the tablet grows on you over time. The body-to-screen ratio seems to be fine for multimedia consumption and the tablet is comfortable to hold. There is a metal unibody and a flat frame design that fits well in your hand. Thanks to the weight of 450 grams and the thin profile of 7.1 mm, the tablet does not dig into your palms. We did not encounter any issues while using it in portrait mode for social media and landscape mode for watching movies/shows and working.

We have the mint green color and the top variant with 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. The color has a matte finish, so you won’t be bothered by fingerprints or smudges when cleaning. Xiaomi also offers the tablet in Graphite Gray and Moonlight Silver colors.

One of the USPs of the Redmi Tab is its display. You get a 10.61-inch screen with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels and a refresh rate of 90 Hz – a first for a budget tablet. Xiaomi says the tablet offers 400 nits of brightness.

The Redmi Pad has Widevine L1 certification, which means you can watch your favorite content in full HD resolution on OTT platforms. We watched movies like Batman vs Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which have dark tones. We also tested the screen with movies like 2017’s Justice League and Thor: Love and Thunder, which have a wide range of colors across all movies.

In both scenarios, rendering performance is better than you would expect from a budget offering. The colors were punchy and pleasant. We experienced no eye pain during marathon sessions of content viewing. We might be nitpicking, but we found the screen a little underwhelming when watching movies with darker tones. But overall, we’re happy with what the tablet offers for the premium it charges.

The display is complemented by an equally well-performing set of speakers. The tablet will have a four-speaker setup Dolby Atmos to coordinate. The speakers are loud and clear. We used the tablet for about an hour a day to play a variety of music genres, including chill space, psytrance, and hip-hop. We didn’t notice any crackling sound while listening to the audio at the highest volume level.
